recession indicator

15-Channel Video Installation
We're currently in an ebb, symptomatic of being caught inside a tide of crisis. We're moving backwards—cutting things, unwinding things, undoing our own fundamentals. Like through X-ray, ours and the institution's spines become visible. Or perhaps the lack thereof. Recession.
The architecture of this installation echoes Walter Benjamin's Passagen—those covered passages that served as the prehistory of modernity's consumer spaces. Our screens, mounted on improvised structures, create new kinds of Durchgänge (passages) and Übergänge (transitions) through which images and narratives flow. Like the iron and glass constructions that housed the earliest department stores, our scaffolding of tables and plexiglass screens creates a space neither fully interior nor exterior, neither completely useful nor entirely decor. The passage becomes a site of circulation, not just of bodies but of affects, stories, and possibilities. Each screen functions as both window and threshold, offering glimpses into other spaces while simultaneously creating new spatial relationships in this room. We move through these digital passageways as flaneurs of the contemporary, collecting fragments and impressions that accumulate into something approaching collective memory.
